Working With Parents

It is the daily parent interaction and the speech-learning environment that is most closely connected with positive child development. The quality of how parents help their children can be improved through systematic coaching and training.

Special Coaching Skills

Our speech therapists have the specialized skills and experience necessary to assure the most effective parent assistance.

Working with parents works.A variety of proven coaching methods are used, starting with an observation of the parent and child in a routine activity. This may occur at our center or with a video tape from home or with direct face to face online video conferencing from your home computer. Click here to learn how.

Effective Parent Support

The specific skills used by parents are analyzed using methods uniquely developed at our center. These observations form the basis of our coaching work with parents.

This helps parents build on their own skills using explicit speech learning activities they can easily embed into daily activities with their children to achieve accelerated speech learning results.

Parents are provided with the specific, targeted approaches to best met their child's needs.

Observe videos of two entirely different approaches using a directed book sharing activity.

In the first video, a child works to improve his speech and sentence use. In the second video, another child works to develop early language literacy skills. Notice how specifically these skills are elicited and practiced with each child by embedding the targets in a book sharing activity.

Therapists at the Speech Therapy Department are also trained in the acclaimed Hanen Parent Training program.
